This is the 25th year East Middle has been open for classes. It was built to accommodate students from Bostic, Ellenboro, and Sunshine for 6th-8th grade. After several years, additions to the three grade level wings, expansion of the cafeteria, and an auxiliary gym were added to accommodate students from Cool Springs who joined in the student body.
The mascot was decided by a staff vote. The original colors were Burgundy and Gray. Over the years the colors changed to Red and Black to be like the high school. This allowed for students who had East clothing to still be able to wear it at the high school as they moved up.
East middle joined the Tri-County Conference the first year. At that time, everyone played each school in the conference once. Only 7th and 8th graders were allowed to participate. The school with the best record was Conference Champs. Years later with budget cuts and rising transportation costs, the conference was divided into two divisions (East, West). This allowed for less travel time and distance thus beginning play-offs for the conference title. Several years ago( around 5) 6th graders were allowed to participate in athletics except the contact sports.
Discussion has taken place many times over the years to go back to playing each team once, but the cost has not allowed it to be changed, so the conference remains with two divisions.
