East Rutherford Middle has received grants for the following projects:

The Learning for Life project is all about teaching students in a special education self contained classroom how to do real life!  Funds will purchase curriculum and materials to supply a separate life skills room for this group of students.  Instruction in social skills, personal hygiene, as well as general functional and life skills is important so that our students can live as independently as possible in the years to come.  Activities will include money skills practice, cooking, vacuuming, sweeping, washing dishes, participating in social conversations, interacting with peers, and practice with hygiene skills.

With our Lights, Camera, Action project we will create a green screen room for video productions in East Rutherford Middle School.  Green screen is where you replace the real background of a video with a digital background. We will have backdrop, appropriate lighting and a camcorder. With the proper background and lighting, student-directed video productions can become something that would be very expensive to produce another way.

In the Unity in the Community project, the self-contained class will collaboratively work with individuals at a local plant nursery and home improvement store to build and maintain a garden. Learning skills such as woodworking and horticulture will allow for students to acquire knowledge that may lead them to a possible career interest. Students in the self-contained classroom will be able to practice socialization and integration with the general population. It is my hope that the culminating plant sale will produce a profit upon completion, allowing the continuation of the project for years to come.
